I just don't get it

I am very confused.... Yes it happens quite often.

I'm booking my boss airfare and Car rental to fly to Las Vegas next month. When getting quotes for the airfare there was a huge margin.

We could go with Southwest and pay $200 per ticket
or
Go with Delta and pay $700 per ticket.

Las Vegas is a Six hour drive from were we are. Driving sucks just because it takes six hours and most of it is out in the desert. But a $500 difference in price? I understand that Southwest isn't the luxury airline like Delta is. They won't even reserve a seat for you on the plane. You get a letter and depending on your letter is when you get to board the plane and chose a seat. But $500 just for a reserved seat? I've had a reserve seat on Delta before and I'll tell you what IT SUCKED. The plane was empty and we were in the very back, I mean the VERY back!!! I also know that Delta is having issues with bankruptcy and pilots wanting to strike. But when it comes to paying $200 or $700 I'll take my chances with a crappy seat on Southwest. It's only an hour or so plane ride.

Then there is the issue with getting a rental car for her once she's there. I found the exact same car ranging from $19.00 per day with Enterprise to $65.99 per day with Hertz and Avis. Why in the world would there be a $47 difference? Even with all the taxes and crap that Enterprise tacks on they still beat them by $248.91 for 4 days FOR THE EXACT SAME CAR!!! Do they honestly think that people don't price match and go with the best deal? What makes Hertz and Avis's car better than Enterprise?

I honestly just don't get it. Maybe there are some people that have loyalties to certain company's but the masses aren't like that (at least I don't think so). Most people just want to get the best deal possible. If grocery stores and department stores have secret shoppers to check prices and make sure they are comparable to other stores, why wouldn't airlines and rental cars do the same? All they need to do is go online and see the difference.

So yeah that's it, I'm just confused as usual. In the end it's my bosses decision and the company money as to who we'll use. But even using the company credit card she'll still choose the lowest cost (as long as it's a direct flight; she hates layovers).

I don't care whose money it is - I still hate wasting that much money. That is a huge difference for the same flight.. UNREAL!!

i had to rent a car in phoenix last week. hertz wanted $800, and avis only charged $400. seriously, i fear for our country that there are people out there stupid enough to pay $800 instead of $400.

The reates to here are weird. They flucuate so much and go from the obsenely ridiculous to somewhat affordable. I have become a whiz at searching for and booking flights for all my friends and family how now love to visit since I live in Vegas!

The difference for that short of a flight is horrid. Frankly, I don't think Delta is that much better...they have REALLY gone down hill.

Matter of fact, about the only way I would pay a lot more (Or really pick between airlines) is for a direct flight. I hate layovers too.
