Remembering New Orleans

As requested from Lil Miss I am posting pictures of New Orleans that I took during my last visit to Lil Miss just 11 months ago. We only spent a day in New Orleans, but I loved everything about it and couldn't wait to visit again so I could take my husband to see it! Now all I have left are these pictures and the images from T.V. and the internet of the distruction that Katrina has left behind her! I have just been glued to the televison or internet since Sunday waiting to see what is happening and as Lil Miss said it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion! I was worried about the effects it would have on my friend and this historical city. I was happy to hear that there was some damage but it was fixable, then when I heard that 2 leveys had broken and the city was flooding, just broke my heart!

I want to cry when I hear about all the stories of survival, loss, and looting! I just can't imagine what my life would be like if the mayor came on the radio or television asking all the residence of Salt Lake to evacuate completely! Where would I go? Most of my family is right here in Utah with me! This has definilty made me rethink my food storage and my 72 hour kits! I am going to be more diligent in getting things ready for any natural disastor that we may have. I mean if something this horrible could happen in here in the United States it could most definilty happen right here in Utah. I mean we.live.on.the.wasatch.fault.line!

I know there isn't much I can do, but I want to do anything that I can. We are donating to the local causes that are trying to raise money for the red cross and the relief funds. So I hope my little donation will help in a big way.

We have a lady that works with us in the office and her daughter lives in Hattiesburg, MS and they were hit pretty hard by the hurricane as alot of cities were. Their house was built 10 feet off the ground and they still recieved flooding! All but one room in their house isn't completely destroyed. Then there is the mold that is toxic from the water and the heat that is making their home completely unlivable. They were able to get out when the evacuation order was announced, but they had to leave their animals. All but one survivied (a rat- no big loss there). They have limited water, not alot of food and only 1/2 tank of gas. Of course all the roads leading in and out are completely unusable so there's no way to even leave if they wanted to. They are going to try to cook on a grill using the wood from a fallen tree. I just can't even imagine their lives! Here I sit at my air conditioned job with my computer, fridge full of soda and cookies and they are trying to live off the land! What do you do!? They are now homeless! So so sad!

So anyways this is my tribute to a once beautiful city with so much history. I hope they are able to rebuild, but we all know it will never be the same.

great pictures... i know exactly where all of those were taken. isn't it just sad that something can be here for years and years and years... and then just be gone like that! i, too, am rethinking my stance on 72-hour kits... at the very least, getting some water.

Thanks for the pictures. I have lots in my files, I just can't bear to look through them right now.

And I know that you want to blame someone. It's hard not to. But the looters didn't ask for this. Terrorists didn't do this. The government didn't bring this on themselves. It was mother nature. and she is one bitch that can never be reckoned with.

Please try to keep the faith in the american people. You never know how you would react when everything you have is lost and the suffering only continues to escalate around you to the point of insanity.

We all want to believe that tragedy will bring out the best in people. But the truth is, good people will still be good people and bad people will still be bad people in the wake of something like this. I heard on the news last night that women were being raped. What is the justification for this? I understand the looting (to a point), but where in the fuck does raping come in. And where is our military/government? Why is someone down there not in charge? I think (from watching the news) that people are upset because there is no organization. They're not getting information. No one is in charge. Surely the city/federal government foresaw this disaster and should have had a plan in place. What happened?

Our military is in Iraq! And president Bush took a fucking nap yesterday! There is no justification. You're right, these issues should have been forseen.

The Mayor of New Orleans has sent out a "desperate SOS", and he's frustrated that things are not being done fast enough.

I don't know who dropped the ball, and frankly, I don't give a damn. JUST DO WHAT IT TAKES TO FIX IT!

Just read that National Guardsmen are bringing supplies to New Orleans. They are also there to help restore order. 1/2 of which returned from overseas to help out. So help is on the way, just took some time to cooridnate everything. I think we are all trying to do our best in whatever ways we can.

It's so strange to see all the destruction and hear of so many people being homeless. Hearing about all the looting and craziness going on down there makes me feel like we are back in the stone age.

crap. I just looked at the pictures again, and finally let it sink in that this city I love...is now destroyed. I've been so focused on the people of new orleans that i nevr took time to really digest the fact that not only did they lose their homes, but they lost their beautful city as well. damnit.
