Can I have your first born?

I was wondering why we don't get a choice of where to sit when at a restaurant.

The past two times we have gone out to lunch with my company (it's a weekly thing) we've either been asked to sit at a table too small for our group or one that is wrong. Let me explain:

Last Friday my office went to a Restaurant to celebrate administrative Day a little early. There were six of us. When we got to the restaurant there were not many people there for (a) Friday afternoon and (b) NOON. They tried to sit us at a round table with exactly six chairs. This would have been okay if the chairs had fit around the table. But there would have been hardly any arm room. All of us could tell that it clearly was too small of a table for six chairs. Right next to the table was a table with eight chairs. We asked to sit there instead. You would have thought we asked the person sitting us for her first born or one of her kidneys. She made a huge deal about letting us sit at that table. It took us nearly 5 minutes to get seated. Then we could see that she was discussing it with the waiter after that. WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL???? I understand that all waitresses and waiter have "areas" but let them know that we had moved, it will be okay, I promise. The world will not quit spinning, life with go on. (as a side note I never did see another waiter in our section, I'm pretty sure it was ALL his)

Second Example: Yesterday we went to lunch again. This time a little closer to our office and one we've frequented often. They know us by name now. We were seated at a normal table that fit the three of us. But when we sat down it was VERY clear the table was not straight. My boss is a small lady, but this table made her look like a child. She barely table came to her mid section and she had to lift her arms just to put them on the table. It was just silly. My side was lower then normal. (we were sitting across from each other). So we asked the girl that brought us the water if we could move to the table right next to it. Again we may have well asked for her first born or kidney. She DID NOT want us to move. But it wasn't up for discussion. We were not going to be sitting at that table. So we moved and I watched her for a little while and she was clearly miffed about it. What was the big deal? It was the same waitress that helped us. They didn't sit anymore people in our section after us (even though there were 3 -4 other tables nearby). So why make such a big deal about it?

I honestly just don't get it. I usually try to be very understanding of people in other workplaces. I've never worked at a restaurant, I'm not 100% sure how things are ran, but I do know that I/we are customers. And I know customers aren't always right but if we are sat at a table not right for, us don't we have a right to speak up and possiably get moved without starting World War III?

I would say that this ia a question for WaiterRant. As you know, I always have bad experiences as restaurants, so I'm not the best to give advice.

I love being able to be of use!

I have years of restaurant/wait experience.

YES, waiters have "Area's"
NO, your request wasn't unusual NOR was it wrong.
YES, some people get their knickers in a twist.
NO, some waiters AND their employers do not believe the customer is always right.
YES, those people are WRONG.
No, I never thought that as a waitress

And finally,

YES, I kicked ass as a waitress and got good tips because I would have bent over backwards to serve a six top well.

um, not sure, but what comes to mind is the fact that, yes waiters have 'areas' and if the waiter in the area you were moving to was 'in the weeds' or over sat, then the areas would need to be switched and the hostess board would get totally screwed, all this just to ensure you still got prompt service at your new location

Erika - I understand that but we were in the exact same area and he still would have been our waiter. He served the table right next to where we were "suppose" to sit.

Same goes for the cricked table area, we've been there enough that we know what areas are the waitresses and we were still in the same waitresses area regardless of the table.
