Should private really be private?

Lately I've had about one doctor appointment each week. I'm a very private person at work and I don't feel like I need to broadcast what the doctor appointments are for (unless it's something serious and will keep me out of work for multiple days).

*I've had an eye appt.
*The annual women's appt.
*A dermatologist appt to have my moles measured (i have a lot of moles on my back)
The doctor then decided one concerns him so I had to make another appointment to have that one removed and while I was there I had a lump removed from the top of my head. All pretty easy procedures and appointments.
*I also had a dentist appt.

This morning I got a call from my boss. First question asked Are You Pregnant? Sure, I have had a lot of appointments but it's really no ones business but my own what they are for. If I was pregnant (which I'm not) it's really up to me to let people know. I know in the next year I will probably have even more appointments possibly weekly appointments. I don't want to have to tell my office what each appointment is for. I try to have my doctor appointments scheduled as late in the day as possible so I don't have to alarm anyone.

What do you think should I tell everyone what my doctor appointments are for? Is it their right to know? Another reason that I don't talk about it at work is I don't feel I need to tell them the results and if they know that I went for a certain thing I get questioned about it later. It's my private medical history I don't feel I need to share, especially the unimportant details that don't affect my job.

Oh wow! Technically no. I would say that you don't have to tell them. It is truly none of their business. They could get in big trouble if they fire you for it as well.

Simply tell them it is personal. :) They may require doctor's notes though. Your doctor could probably make them as vague as possible for you.

That's true what Sweet yet Sassy said. If they are requiring doctor's notes all it has to have is the doctor's name it does not have to say what it was about. And it's none of their friggin business what your appointments are for. It's totally your choice if you want to tell them but don't feel like you have to.

I like the simple It is personal approach. None of their business. I am sure that most of them are just concerned that you're ok, but there are those curious gossipmongers about...

As long as you are getting your work done and your appointments are taken with your acquired time off it is none of their business what it is for. If they require a doctor's note to prove you actually wne tot a doctor you can have your doctor write one for you but not with any specifics.

It is none of their business if you are pregnant or not. They probably wanted to know if you would be leaving for maternity leave later so they could plan for your replacement. At least that is what my work would do.

fudjamajudge!! I can't believe anyone had the balls to even ask that in the first place!!

a) It's none of their damned business - end of report.

b) If you are and they fire you for that reason.. ohMIGAWD - they can get in some serious trouble. When I started looking for representation in my lawsuit, that was one of the big four questions they asked - because that's kind of a "gimme" in the wrongs an employer can do in wrongful termination.

c) It's none of their damned business. What if it was for something embarrassing?? Or something REALLY personal. F them. I would be teetering on the edge of telling human resources - but you don't want a hostile work environment. If they keep asking I would definitely tell someone so there is a record!!

CWAZY FWEAKS!!

You guys all rock!

The problem is I work in a small office. The owner of the company is my boss so really there isn't human resources or anything. and if I was pregnent I would give them at least six months notice (not that I would quit). I mean really; I'd start to show eventually.

DON'T TELL THEM.
It's YOUR BUISNESS... NOT THEIRS!

PEOPLE ARE SO STUPID!

I work in the same kind of environment as you, so I understand how it can be kind of difficult.

First, your boss was really tactless in asking you that. She should not have done that.

Second, if someone does happen to ask about the appointments and you don't want to use the "it's personal" line which may give people the wrong impression, just tell them that all of your yearly appointments come at the same time. That's very general and will usually stop any questions because regular check-ups are boring.

Third, since you know you're going to have several appointments in the future, I would meet with your boss and tell her that you have several doctor appointments coming up. Tell her that you're ok, it's nothing serious and it won't affect your job, but that you wanted to let her know ahead of time.

I know what you're going through. I didn't tell anyone in my office that I was pregnant until my 13th week, and by that time I'd already had several doctor appointments. It's hard, but sometimes you do have to just tell people to mind their own business.

Oh c'mon J!! Can't you make up some great stories?? We used to make sh** up all the time for Martel (sp?)--

It's my great uncle's dying wish to plant wildflowers beside the freeway in Nephi, so I'll be leaving shortly after lunch.
